Speaker Enclosures:
Vehicle specific Pre-fabricated
These enclosures are color matched and shaped specifically to fit in the vehicle they are designed for.  They are typically located in the drivers and passengers kick panel and are designed to house a mid-bass / midrange speaker, a tweeter, and the crossover network.  By locating the tweeter and mid-bass / midrange on the same baffle and angled toward the driver and passenger, the sound of both reach your ears at the exact same time.  This eliminates acoustical problems that can result from having speakers in different physical locations on the same side of the vehicle, such as when mounting the mid-bass / midrange in the door and the tweeter on “A” pillar.

Sub Woofer Enclosure Styles:
Sealed Enclosures
The most common and versatile type of enclosure is sealed.  This style enclosure is ideal for any application where space is going to be an issue. and also have the advantage over vented enclosures in terms of overall sound clarity providing a smooth deep bass.  A sealed subwoofer box will deliver a tight, clean and accurate bass response and have a flat frequency response curve.  In general, a sealed box will be for listeners looking for sound quality driven system that is clean across the entire frequency band.
Vented Enclosures
A vented enclosure just means the enclosure has a hole in it to let air escape.  You know that guy you can hear from 2 blocks away?  Well he is likely using a vented box.  Vented boxes are more efficient than their sealed counterparts, since they channel sound waves from the front and rear of the cone into the listening environment.  This gives it a much more boomy effect with less accurate bass response.  With vented enclosures, you do not need as much power coming out of your system since the lack of an airtight box allows your subwoofer to move much more freely and the vents allowing you to hear every bit of sound produced by your subwoofer.

Types of Subwoofer Enclosures:
Standard Pre-fabricated
These enclosures are typically rectangular in shape and are made to hold anywhere from 1 to 3 subwoofers.  They are made of MDF (medium density fiber board) and are covered in a material similar to what you typically see in a trunk of a vehicle.
Vehicle specific Pre-fabricated
These enclosures are shaped specifically to fit in the vehicle they are designed for.  Ones that are used in trunk or rear hatch applications are designed to use the least amount of space and typically conform to the side or rear of the trunk.  Others are designed to fit in a vehicles cabin and typically mount under the seat or in the center console.  Enclosures usually hold 1 or 2 subwoofers and are either made of MDF or a high density polyethylene resin.
